Enjoying Storytelling via Scary Shows

Updated: Feb 13

I love movies and TV shows. If I can watch a show while doing my laundry or making some food, I do it. Personally, I believe that a lot of movies and shows are great to get kids interested in storytelling. I sure know that it did for me! Spooky kids shows are some of the reasons that I like horror so much. They are also a great way to expose kids to different types of media so they can decide what genres they like.

When I was younger, I liked a lot of shows that included horror, such as Are You Afraid of the Dark, Eerie Indiana, Goosebumps, A Series of Unfortunate Events, and Just Add Magic.

Just Add Magic is a show about three girls named Kelly, Hannah, and Darby, who discover a magic cookbook in their attic. The way the show is written is very similar to an R.L. Stine book, except with dialogue that sounds more modern than some of the old Goosebumps's books. The horror in it is not too heavy but is still very creepy for young kids, but it was never something that gave me nightmares when I was younger. And while I’ve watched the show by myself and enjoyed it, the most fun I have is watching it with family.

I’ve always enjoyed watching shows and movies with my family because it makes the experience more fun. Being able to talk and say what I like and don’t like about the show or movie helps me learn how to be a better storyteller myself. When I was younger watching Just Add Magic with my mom and sister, I would talk to them about why I liked or didn’t like the plot twist, or why I thought Chuck was a good villain.

I also enjoyed watching Are You Afraid of the Dark, Eerie Indiana, Goosebumps, and A Series of Unfortunate Events. These shows got me into creating stories about horror, and using elements from the show to make my stories better. These shows are very enjoyable but won’t make you have nightmares, and I recommend these shows for kids whether they are into horror or not.

I know spooky shows helped develop the writer I am today, especially when I was able to discuss the elements of a story with my family.

Let me know in the comments, is there a show you enjoy more with someone else? Do you have any other spooky kids shows you recommend? Let me know, and keep on shivering.

I enjoy watching Monk with my husband be a it’s more fun to laugh together. I’ve always loved watching Alfred Hitchcock films.

I still can't get enough of "North by Northwest!" That film is so epic and fun, and I love the fanfare/score by composer Bernard Hermann!
