How I Write My Novels: Scrivener Review for Writers

To quote Wikipedia, A scrivener (or scribe) was a person who could read and write or who wrote letters as well as court and legal documents. Scriveners were people who made their living by writing or copying written material.

One of the tools I use to write my books is Scrivener.

Scrivener was founded in 2007 and is a word processor and outliner. Scrivener has multiple writing formats, which include three different fiction format options, three Non-Fiction format options, Scriptwriting with six different format options, and Miscellaneous with two format options, Persuasive Lecture, and Recipe Collection.

I started using Scrivener at age 10. After my mom showed me how to use it a couple of times, I didn’t need help again. It is very easy to use.

I use the fiction formatting in Scrivener for planning and writing my novels. When I open the document, it gives me additional tools for the outlining process. I like using the character outline page and a setting outline page. I find this very helpful in the brainstorming process when delving into my main characters and environments.

My favorite thing about Scrivener is that you can write a lot on just one file.  I can keep track of brainstorming, outlines, chapters, and revisions all in a single file.

Another great feature of Scrivener is that once you download it onto your computer, you don’t need the internet to use it, and it works just as well offline as it does online. This is very helpful for me as I do a lot of my novel writing in the car on my hour-long car drive to dance class.

The only real downside to Scrivener is that there isn’t a sharing mode (that I know of) like there is with Google Docs. Besides that, Scrivener is my go-to option when writing one of my books. Overall, I’d rate Scrivener a 9/10 due to how easy it is to use, the amount of features it has, and how well it works offline. It loses a point just because there is no group mode that I know of, but everything else about it is perfect. If it does have a group mode, please let me know how to use it in the comments!

I highly recommend Scrivener and definitely think that you should try it out if you are into writing books or if you just want easy-to-use writing software.

Now I’ve got a question for you. Tell me, are there any writing tools you rely on (like Grammarly, for example)? Let me know, and always remember to keep on shivering.

Very cool, I didn't know about this application. I plan to start writing about esports, I'll definitely use Scrivener, especially for the non-offline feature which helps a lot. I find myself more productive and creative when I'm far away from all medias and internet notifications.

Hi Jules, it's cool that you plan to start writing about esports and Scrivener will definitely help you a bunch with it being able to work offline. It helps me a lot because I also tend to be more creative when I'm not being distracted by a bunch of other things that are happening at the same time. Thanks for reading, and I hope that Scrivener works well with the way you write because it works for me, and I love it.

I used to love dictionary.com, but now, grammarly and chat.gpt make editing, revising, word choice, etc., so much easier.

Hi Vasili, I used to love dictionary.com as well but with Grammarly and chat.gpt it has become a bit obsolete, but it definitely still has a purpose. Thanks for reading!

Hi Jessica, I love Grammarly as well, even if it gets annoying as times. I've never used chatgpt to help me brainstorm before, but hearing that you do that makes me want to try it as well. Thanks for reading!
