My Top 10 Favorite Halloween Costumes

Updated: 3 days ago

Halloween will soon be here! For me, it’s always been more than just a night of candy and spooky decorations. What I love most is the chance to become someone—or something—else for a day. Costumes allow us to enter different characters from books, movies, or imaginations. Over the years, I’ve had the opportunity to dress up for Halloween, performances, and other events, and each costume has its own story. So, here are my top 10 favorites.

#1 Dogman

As a kid, I connected with Dog Man. His costume was simple but hilarious - a dog head on a cop's body. There’s something timeless about dressing up as a hero from a beloved book series.

#2 Ricky Ricardo from I Love Lucy

I grew up watching I Love Lucy and was thrilled when my dance studio had me dress up as Ricky Ricardo. I felt like honoring an iconic era of television. I enjoyed the challenge of embodying his style—suit, slicked-back hair, and all.

#3 Captain Planet

This costume brought back the 90s in all its environmental hero glory. Who wouldn't want to dress up as someone with the power to the Earth?

#4 Wolverine

Growing up, I admired Wolverine, and this costume made me feel powerful—claws and all. There’s something about superheroes that taps into a universal sense of strength and resilience. I was so excited when I was out trick-or-treating and met a guy dressed up as Pennywise from Stephen King's IT. Also, check out my sister dressed as MIB.

#5 Harry Potter

As a fan of the books, dressing as Harry Potter with my dance buddy was a natural choice. Throw on some glasses and draw a scar on your forehead to become the boy who lived!

#6 Dr. Mario

I loved playing old-school games as a kid, and Dr. Mario was one of my favorites. Dr. Mario is a fun twist on the classic Mario costume. I transformed into the character with a white coat, a tie, and a painted-on mustache. My mom gave me an empty pill bottle since Dr. Mario is a game that uses colored pills.

#7 The Wiz

Inspired by the musical, this costume stood out because of its vibrant colors and theatrical style. I played the Wiz in a tap dance piece during the pandemic. The costume designer created matching masks for each of our outfits.

#8 Morph Suit

The morph suit is one of those costumes that strips down complexity and leaves you with something almost surreal. My sister loved taking photos, so we did a photoshoot with me in my morph suit at the beach. I got into character and enjoyed playing around in the photos.

#9 Mad Hatter

The Mad Hatter is a whimsical and chaotic character. This costume allowed me to tap into a different kind of creativity, from the oversized hat to the eccentric style of the outfit. I especially loved pretending I was going mad in this costume.

#9 Darth Maul

This costume leaned into the darker side of Halloween. The intricate face paint and the double-bladed lightsaber made it one of the most intense costumes I’ve worn, perfectly capturing the character's menace.

#10 The Joker

This year, I’m going as The Joker. There’s a complexity to the character that I’m looking forward to exploring—his chaotic energy and his iconic smile. Seeing how a character comes to life through costume is always exciting.

So, what’s the best costume you’ve ever worn? What are you planning for Halloween this year? I’d love to hear about it. Thanks for reading, and as always, remember to keep on shivering!
