“Look away, look away. This show will wreck your evening, your whole life, and your day.” Those theme song lyrics to the T.V. show, A Series of Unfortunate Events, horrified me when I was younger. Although I found the show terrifying, A Series of Unfortunate Events is one of my favorite shows of all time.
I watched A Series of Unfortunate Events on Netflix from ages six to nine, as I had to wait for new episodes to be released. I’m surprised I watched this show at a young age because it is pretty dark, but I loved the books and wanted to watch it with my older sister.
A Series of Unfortunate Events follows three kids named Violet, Klaus, and Sunny Baudelaire, with Violet being the eldest at 14 years of age and Sunny being the youngest at 2 or 3. It starts with the Baudelaire children at the beach. Here, they learn from their banker, Arthur Poe, that their parents died in a fire and that they are now orphans. Poe explains they have to live with their closest relative, Al Funcoot, who is really the main antagonist of the show, Count Olaf. Count Olaf wants the Baudelire’s fortune and nothing of the children.
This is definitely one of the scarier kids shows I have seen, but I think that it’s a great watch for anyone whose child likes horror or drama; just maybe wait a bit before you let them watch the show, depending on how old they are or how much of a tolerance they have to shows like this.
Even if you don’t let them watch the show, it doesn’t mean you can’t let them read the books. That’s right, A Series of Unfortunate Events is actually based on the book series A Series of Unfortunate Events! I know, shocker, right? These books follow the same storyline as the show.
The book series doesn’t come off as dark as the show since you’re reading the story. The books aren’t really that scary; there are some things that make you think, “Oh my! I hope that never happens to me!”
There’s also A Series of Unfortunate Events movie with Jim Carrey, but I haven’t watched it yet.
A Series of Unfortunate Events is a great T.V. show, and I would recommend it to both kids and adults. And if you don’t want to watch the show, try reading the books; I promise you won’t regret it!
But now, I’ve got a question for you. Is there a book series that you like that got turned into a show or movie? Let me know and remember to keep on shivering.
My favourite adaptation of book to the movies must be Harry Potter. I mean there is so many but this one would be my favorite. I enjoy how I watched it as a kid and now I am 27 and it is still so good and it never aged. Recently they also made a game called Hogwarts Legacy for PS5 and let me tell you I am obsessed! :)
Mom and my human sibling loved Dan Brown's Da Vinci code books and actually thought the movies did a pretty good job (so often they cannot come close to the book)!
I enjoyed the sisterhood of the traveling pants books/movies when I was a teen. Then of course Harry Potter, the Hunger games and the Divergent series all stand out as some of my favorite book to movie series.
A show that I both read books to my kids and watched on T.V. was Curious George. We love that show! It's always fun when you read a book and get to compare it to a book or movie. Harry Potter is a book series I read that I also enjoyed watching as movies.
